Hugh passed on November 29, 2011 from complications while recovering from surgery, after a fall. He was surrounded by his family and friends. Hugh was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had and has a testimony of Jesus Christ and the restored gospel. He served an LDS mission to Eastern Canada. After his mission, Hugh married his High School sweetheart Janet Lee Christensen in the Salt Lake Temple on May 6, 1953. Hugh was a successful entrepreneur, the owner of Cummings Cars, Cummings Christmas Trees, Apartment buildings and for a while a distributor of Vernors soft drinks. He was self-motivated and a hard worker. Even at age 80, he never retired. He taught by example how to be more kind. He befriended many people and quietly provided employment, housing, and other opportunities. Preceded in death by his mother and father, and his son Cory Michael Cummings. Survived by his wife, Janet Lee Christensen Cummings; children: Christopher Hugh (Helen), Kim Lynden, KaraLee Michelle (Greg) Goates; grandchildren: Anthony (Brooke), James (Heather), Rachael (Justin) McAllister, Laura Cummings and Morgan, Cameron, Preston and Amber Goates; great-grandchildren: Keegan and Cory Cummings; siblings: Rulon (Jeannine), Todd (Colleen) and Karen (Doug) Nielsen. As the founder’s oldest son, Chris took on a great responsibility upon the passing of our dear Hugh – to become the personal representative for all the legal proceedings that would follow. Primarily in control of releasing liens, and other financing aspects, Chris has been at the forefront of converting the files to electronic form, as well as organizing the loan documents which are so vital for all our past, present, and future customers.

Greg Goates – Owner

Greg started his automotive career back in college, washing and detailing cars for Cummings Cars while dating the founder’s daughter. Now as one of the owners in charge of purchasing, accounting, and a myriad of other day-to-day tasks, he is one busy man!

Kent Cummings – Wholesale/Retail Sales Manager

Hugh’s nephew Kent has been in the auto industry from the 1970’s to the present. He has managed or owned successful franchise and independent dealerships in Utah, California, and Wyoming, with a lot of fun in between.

James Cummings – Salesman/Office Manager

801-652-9711   james@cummingscars.com

Following in the entrepreneurial footsteps of his grandfather, James has been involved in the car lot’s day-to-day operations ever since Hugh’s passing. Chris, Greg, Kent, Shawn (Kent’s son, who has grown up surrounded by cars) and others have all trained him in their own ways. With his I.T. background, passion for the legacy, and willingness to learn, the business has been brought proudly into the hearts of future generations. Always with a smile and a handshake.

Thanks to this team, the car business grew from 3 cars in a Holladay, Utah driveway to over 35 cars on the lot, at a dealership on 3900 South in Millcreek, Utah.

We continue to value our roots with quality, gently used automobiles, and also love hybrid and electric vehicles. All the while honoring our training with low mileage, older vehicles that have stood the test of time. But mostly we love our smiling customers and friends we have served these 60+ years! We continue to value our relationships more than money.

Thank you to all those who have supported us, befriended us, trusted us, and worked with us along this journey.
